Multimodal freight
Multimodal Freight from Dubai — Sea, Air and Land in One Shipment
Sea-air, sea-land and air-land routes planned leg by leg, booked once and managed by one team — the right mode for every part of the journey.
Not every shipment fits one mode. Multimodal transport combines sea, air and land into a single journey under one contract — so you get the cost of ocean freight on the long leg and the speed of air or road where it matters.
MEPL International runs multimodal freight from Dubai, one of the world's best-placed transhipment hubs: Jebel Ali port, Dubai International and Al Maktoum airports and the GCC road network all within a short drive. We plan the route, book every leg, handle customs at each border and give you one point of contact from origin to delivery.
Our solutions
Multimodal freight solutions
We choose the mode for each leg — not one mode for the whole trip.
Sea-air & air-sea freight
Ocean to Dubai, then onward by air — or the reverse — from all UAE airports and major ports. Much faster than all-sea, far cheaper than all-air.
- Asia → Dubai → Europe and Africa
- Ideal for seasonal and fashion stock
- Transit through Jebel Ali and DWC
Sea-land freight
Container shipping to a port, then road or rail to an inland destination.
- Port-to-door delivery across the GCC
- Landlocked markets in Central Asia
- Container kept sealed end to end
Air-land freight
Air cargo to the nearest gateway, then trucking to final delivery.
- Cities without direct flights
- Cross-border road from the gateway
- Fast door-to-door delivery
Project & long-haul routes
Complex multi-country moves planned leg by leg.
- Mode chosen for each leg
- One booking and one invoice
- Milestone tracking across modes
Sea-air
Sea-air freight through Dubai
Sea-air freight is the classic Dubai multimodal route. Cargo from China, India or South East Asia sails to Jebel Ali, moves under customs transit to Dubai's airports and flies on to Europe, Africa or the CIS.
The result is a transit time much closer to air freight than sea freight, at a fraction of the all-air cost. It works best for stock that is late for an all-sea schedule, seasonal launches and goods too heavy to justify full air rates.
Compare
Air freight vs sea freight vs sea-air
Choosing between air and sea freight? A combined route often sits in the sweet spot.
| All sea | Sea-air | All air | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transit time | Slowest | Medium | Fastest |
| Cost per kg | Lowest | Medium | Highest |
| Best for | Bulk, heavy, non-urgent | Time-sensitive stock at lower cost | Urgent, high-value, light |
| CO₂ per kg | Lowest | Medium | Highest |
Lower cost than air
Long leg by sea keeps the price down.
Faster than sea
The air or road leg cuts days off the transit.
One responsible party
One contract covers the cargo end to end.
Explained
Multimodal vs intermodal transport
| Multimodal | Intermodal | |
|---|---|---|
| Contracts | One, for the whole journey | One per leg |
| Responsibility | One operator end to end | Each carrier for its leg |
| Documents | One multimodal document | Separate bill per leg |
| Coordination | Done by the operator | Done by the shipper |
The difference between intermodal and multimodal transport is mostly about who is responsible. With MEPL you get a multimodal service: one contract and one team.
Paperwork
The multimodal transport document
A multimodal transport document covers the whole journey in one bill, instead of a separate ocean bill of lading, air waybill and road consignment note for each leg.
FIATA Multimodal Bill of Lading (FBL)
MEPL issues the FBL itself as a FIATA member — a negotiable document under FIATA rules. It is accepted under letters of credit and makes the forwarder liable for the cargo from receipt to delivery.
With one document there is one reference for multimodal shipment tracking, one set of terms and one party to talk to if anything goes wrong.
